5 Top Breastfeeding Myths Debunked

The moment you become a mother everyone wants to give you advice, whether you’ve asked for it or not. Motherhood is hard enough without hearing conflicting stories from people who each insist that they are right. And breastfeeding seems to be one of the things that people have the most opinions on.

But a lot of advice out there needs to be debunked, and we’re here to shed some light on some of the most talked about breastfeeding myths to put your already tired mind at ease.

Myth #1: Your baby will know what to do

Uh, have you met a newborn? They don’t know how to do much. No fault of their own, of course. To their credit, they’ve only just been born. Your baby is born with reflexes to help them automatically come to the breast to feed, but that doesn’t mean they always know what to do, and neither do you. This is a learning process for both of you and what happens quickly for one might take longer for another. That’s okay!

Myth #2: Small breasts produce less milk

Small-breasted women – fear not! Size really does not matter when it comes to breastfeeding. Milk storage capacity may vary from woman to woman, but that simply means some might have to feed more or less often than others. Milk production is stimulated each time the baby feeds, so the more they feed the more milk is produced, regardless of breast size.

Myth #3: You must drink milk to make milk

Milk production is a supply and demand process, and breastfeeding serves to replenish and then refill that milk. Drinking milk has absolutely nothing to do with this process. You should, however, always keep hydrated with water. Breastfeeding is hard work!

Myth #4: Breastfeeding helps you lose weight

Some women lose a lot of weight while breastfeeding, others gain weight, and some stay the same. There’s no exact science to this as everybody is different. However, while breastfeeding, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make sure you are getting enough nutrition.

Myth #5: You will bond with your baby

Every woman has their own journey through motherhood. Many feel an immense bond when breastfeeding, while some don’t feel this at all. The bonding isn’t always from breastfeeding, but often the simple act of having your baby close to you. And many women feel this bond in their own way.

Breastfeeding is just one part of motherhood, and for some, it’s not possible at all. As long as your child is getting sufficient nutrition, you’re doing a good job. So forget about all the breastfeeding myths you’ve heard (and will continue to hear), and focus on the only thing that’s important right now – your child.
