Dressing Your Newborn — Questions Covered

Many newborns skip 0000 sizing entirely, particularly if they arrive on the larger side. Sizing up to 000 or even 00 is often a safer bet, and babies grow fast enough that they won't be in any size for long. Having a small selection across two sizes means you're covered either way.

Bamboo is one of the most popular choices for newborn clothing because it's incredibly soft, breathable, and naturally temperature-regulating. Organic muslin and merino wool are also excellent options for layering and wrapping. All three are gentle on sensitive newborn skin.

Plan for at least three to five outfit changes a day in the early weeks as nappy blowouts and spit-up are a constant reality. Having a good stock of bamboo zip growsuit rompers means you're not doing laundry constantly. The zip style is particularly worth its weight in gold for those middle-of-the-night changes.

In the immediate hours after birth, yes. Newborns lose heat through their heads quickly and hospitals will often put a hat on them straight away. At home, a hat indoors is generally only needed if your home is particularly cool. Check the back of baby's neck to gauge their temperature.

Soft fabric headbands like top knot or bow knot styles can be worn from birth for photos and outings, as long as they fit comfortably and aren't too tight. Always remove them when your baby is sleeping or unsupervised. They're one of those lovely little extras that make newborn outfits feel complete.

A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby in one more layer than you'd wear yourself. A short-sleeve onesie as a base layer with a growsuit over the top works well in mild weather, and a merino wool newborn cocoon or swaddle adds warmth when needed. Muslin swaddle wraps are brilliant because they're breathable and easy to add or remove.

They serve slightly different purposes. Stretchy swaddles offer a firmer, more womb-like compression that many newborns find very settling, while organic muslin swaddle wraps are lighter, more breathable, and incredibly versatile. Many parents find having both on hand gives them flexibility depending on the season.
